Food items are items used to raise pets into mounts. Upon collection or purchase, these items can be found under the Food category of the player's inventory or in the Quick Inventory action drawer in the Stable.
How To Obtain A Food Item[]
- Receiving one from a random drop that become available after a player has completed their second task.
- Purchasing one from the Market with gems.
- From use of the Enchanted Armoire, or as quest rewards and check-in prizes.
Feeding Your Pet (Website)[]
You can feed a food item to the pet of your choice from the Stable's Quick Inventory action drawer (direct link), which contains all food and saddles stored in your item inventory. To feed a pet:
- Click on the food item.
- The image of the food will turn light purple and a second image of the item will follow your pointer around the screen.
- Place the pointer over the pet you wish to feed and click.
- The image of the pet you are about to feed will be highlighted with a purple border and a shield icon.
- To cancel the action, click on the image of the food you are currently using again.
Under each pet is a Food Bar, which fills by a certain amount each time the pet is fed, depending on whether or not the food is it's preference. See Food Preferences for information on how quickly the Food Bar fills up based on the type of food a pet is fed.
When the Food Bar reaches 100%, the pet becomes a mount and disappears from your pet Stable. It can be replaced by hatching another egg of the same type. Pets that have been raised to mounts but not re-hatched are either shaded grey (if you don't have the hatching potion & egg needed) or potion & egg are shown. After a pet becomes a mount, it still continues to count towards the Beast Master achievement.
Hatching a second pet of the same type replaces the greyed out pet image with a full-color image. This re-hatched pet does not have a Food Bar and cannot be fed because you already have a mount of this type.
Faster methods[]

The fastest in-game method to change a pet into a mount is to use a saddle. Saddles can be purchased in the Market at any time for the price of 5 gems, or they can be acquired as a daily check-in prize.
Upon using a saddle on a pet, the pet will automatically be turned into a mount. If the pet has already been partially fed there is no refund for the food used.
However, if you are comfortable using third-party browser extensions, you can use the Bulk Feed Pets Tool.
Feeding Your Pet (App)[]
Pets can also be fed through the Habitica app. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Open the menu (the three stacked lines on the bottom-right of the app)
- Under "Inventory" tap on "Pets & Mounts"
- Tap on a hatching potion category to find your pets
- Tap on a pet with a green bar that still needs to be filled
- A menu will pop up at the bottom of the screen with the options to "Feed" or "Equip"
- Tap "Feed"
- You will see a list of all food in your inventory along with the count
- Tap the food, and your pet will be fed
- You'll be returned to the pet selection screen, and the green bar will move as confirmation
Types of Food[]
There are ten types of food. Each type can be bought for 1 gem and can be sold for 1 gold in the Market. Different types of pets may prefer different types of food. Pets hatched with a Magic Hatching Potion do not have any food preferences.
Food Formats[]
Each type of food has different forms. The normal form is available during most of the year. During some special events, festive varieties replace the normal food in Drops and in the Shop. These special foods have different names and images than the normal ones but are used in the same way, and have the same effect.
The special forms are:
- Cake: Habitica Birthday Bash and Habitica Naming Day
- Candy: Habitoween at the end of the Fall Festival
- Pie: Pi Day (March 14) and Turkey Day
When a variety of special food becomes available, each player will be automatically given one of each of type of that variety.
Each variety of special food also has ten types, corresponding to the ten normal types of food, as shown in the table below.
