A Routine involves assigning a particular order, time, or trigger for doing one or more common tasks. By adding additional structure, the player can reduce opportunities for procrastination or indecision, and keep themselves organized. Routines can also help make the most out of unscheduled time.
This can be especially useful for tasks with no externally imposed order or deadlines, such as household chores or self-employed work tasks. It's easy for such tasks to pile up, but assigning each one a specific time might become excessively inflexible or lead to a cluttered calendar. Routines provide a middle ground between strict scheduling and complete lack of structure.
Dailies and Routine TagsEdit
Create a tag for each routine, if desired. This allows you to filter by the relevant tasks. Examples:
- Time of day: morning, afternoon, evening.
- By events: before breakfast, before work, before lunch, after work, before bed.
- Work session routines: typical tasks in order for a meeting, typical order for cleaning a room.
- Prepare for work routines: prepare for client project, prepare for writing session, etc.
Add elements of the routine to your Dailies list. Add routine-tags as appropriate. Adjust the day of the week due if appropriate (e.g. clean fridge on Thursdays when you buy groceries on Thursday or Friday).
Sort in the order you plan to do them, e.g. before breakfast tasks, then before work, or morning tasks, then afternoon tasks, etc.
Bonus: in Habitica, it's easy to move the order around if you realize it's more efficient to walk the dog before breakfast rather than after.
Routines with ChecklistsEdit
By using checklists, players can create Dailies containing entire routines. An example might include a morning routine with checklist items for the tasks that need to be done as part of that routine in the order in which the player wants to do them. Using a checklist adds the difficulty of potentially not being able to check off the item unless all items in the routine are done if the player so chooses; if you check a Daily without all the items in its checklist being checked off, you are treated as if you did, in fact, check off all the boxes in the routine. Conversely, if you check all the boxes in the Daily but not the Daily itself, it will be treated as a missed Daily (although you will not take damage from it).
Build Habit: On TargetEdit
If you're using routines as a flexible schedule, help keep yourself on track by aiming to be on target. Create a Habit and use "+" for every routine completed within the allotted period (e.g. before breakfast or in the morning). Use "-" (if helpful) for missing any task.
